Sunday Ride Protocols

Ride notes: This is an informal ride, and as always, remember that this is a social ride; your safety and the safety of your fellow riders is paramount. As a reminder here are some basic group ride protocols which you may also find useful for your own rides.

Safe speed: The safe speed for road conditions will differ from rider to rider. You are responsible to pick a pace that is comfortable and within your ability. There will be plenty of opportunities to regroup. Never ride beyond your limits in an attempt to keep up with another rider!

Safe distance: Do not follow closely; leave a safe distance between you and the next rider. It is especially important to avoid following closely on secondary roads where you can't see around the next corner and circumstances can change without warning. Passing: If you must ride faster than the rider in front of you, put your blinker on and pass. If you see a rider behind you preparing to pass, move over. There is little point to passing when riding in a group, however. We all get there about the same time...

Lane discipline: Never cross the double yellow line! Always stay in your lane, and pick your line accordingly.

Passing: If you are prepared to ride faster than the rider in front, put your blinker on and pass. If you see a rider behind you preparing to pass, move over and give plenty of room. Don't speed up!

Stopping: If the group stops, pull off the road completely. When the group starts, be sure to look over your shoulder for approaching traffic before you pull out after the person in front of you. Don't assume it is clear just because they pulled out...

Breakdowns: The sweeps and riding friends may stop and provide assistance. It is not safe for then entire group to stop for one rider unless there is plenty of room to pull off the road.

Taking off early: It is fine to head home early, but it is appreciated if you let the others in the group or the sweeps know so we don't wait around or go looking for you.

Dear Riding Friends! Great News!

California BMW Triumph's December Shop Ride will be a DualSport Clinic. We've been promising one all fall, and now we have an opportunity to have an experienced presenter, Harry "Doc" Wong conducting a clinic in a format we have done many times together before. I highly recommend attending Friday night's presentation, even if you have never ridden in the dirt and have no intention of riding on Sunday.

This is way cool! Doc Wong just got a new R1200GS, and this clinic will be geared for the bigger dual sport bikes from GSes to F650s, the larger KTM bikes to XR650Ls, KLR 650s, and the like. This clinic is held on two separate days. Please note: Friday night's talk is a prerequisite to Sunday's drilling and ride. We will also be asking for a $20.00 donation to the Clear Creek Legal Defense Fund / Blue Ribbon Coalition. As you may be aware, your right to ride offroad is under serious attack nationwide and the Blue Ribbon Coalition is the premier organization when it comes to preserving your opportunities to ride offroad.

Part A: Friday evening Nov 30th, 7:30 PM will be a 1 1/2 hour talk at:

California BMW/Triumph in Mountain View.
2490 Old Middlefield Way
Mountain View, CA 94043
(650) 966-1183 x3 or email Kari
Directions on www.CALmoto.com

RSVP's to Kari would be appreciated so we know how many chairs to provide. Light refreshments will be served. This is separate from the registration with Doc Wong for the Sunday Clinic.

Attendance at the lecture is essential and required for you to be at Sunday's drills and ride. We'll be going over vital information and demonstrations of the drills. Of course you'll be doing the drills at your own level on Sunday. Topics covered range from cornering to balance, sliding, braking and wheeling your bike. Even if you are not planning to ride on Sunday you may want to attend Friday evening's program to get a good basic introduction to dual sport riding.

Part B: Sunday 9 AM to 4 PM will be the clinic at Hollister Hills (State Vehicular Recreation Area-SVRA)

Hollister Hills (State Vehicular Recreation Area-SVRA) is where those drills covered on Friday night will be practiced until lunch. The dirt drills are designed to accommodate the more newbie dirt rider. If you're more of an intermediate dirt rider or advanced dirt rider we'd appreciate any help you'd like to give in leading a group, etc.

After lunch we will break up into groups based on skill level and ride some of the larger, easier dirt roads of Hollister Hills SVRA. Kari Prager of Cal BMW/Triumph will be leading the group of larger dual-sport bikes! Other experienced ride-leader-volunteers are needed, so let me know if you'd be willing to lead a group in the afternoon.

TO REGISTER: E-mail ASAP at:
Docwong@docwong.com
(limited to the first 40 riders, so if you register and can't make it, please let me know ASAP as there will be a waiting list)

TO RSVP for Friday:
E-mail ASAP to Kari

RSVP's would be appreciated so we know how many chairs we need and how much food and refreshments to provide. Anyone is welcome to come to the evening "Dirt Riding Workshop - Talks and Demonstrations" part of the clinic and it is not limited in numbers, however the practical "Dirt Ride Drills and Dirt Ride" part of the clinic is limited to 40 riders who have pre-registered.

WHAT TO BRING TO THE DIRT RIDE

  1. Snacks, lunch and water.
  2. Gear: Minimally have a good helmet, gloves, heavy boots, blue jeans and a long sleeved shirt. Full dirt riding gear is ideal: Dirt helmet, goggles, chest protector, elbow guards, gloves, knee pads and dirt boots. Regular dual sport riding and touring gear is ok too, but be aware it may get hot.
  3. Mechanical: bike in good order, knobbies will work best, however dual-sport tires will work also. Street bike tires will provide a unique experience and are not recommended!
  4. Tools: Having a decent tool kit is always a good idea.

I hope you can join us. Have fun and be safe! E-mail me or call me at (650) 966-1183, ext. 3, if you have any questions or concerns.

Best regards,
Kari Prager
